This Is Getting Old...

First of all, thanks to everyone out there that sent in your words of encouragement. I am eternally grateful.

That being said, I'm in the process of switching gears. I've been working on a new guide for the past several weeks that deals with purchasing a newly built home. With the help of my wife, who also happens to be a licensed Loan Officer and Professional Studio Design Consultant of several years, I've put together a comprehensive guide that will help anyone interested in purchasing a newly built home get through it without absolutely losing it.

My wife and I went through this process several years ago during the construction of our new home back in '98. It's not something that brings back fond memories since we really had no idea of what to expect. We ended up making some huge mistakes that made the entire process that much more stressful and irritating. What should have been a very happy and exciting time in our lives ended up being one of the most frustrating experiences ever. Not to mention the huge dent that was left in our savings account.

Anyways, I guess I'm just bored with the shower filter thing. I really don't see the point of creating a guide for other water filtration devices at this point. Maybe I'll revisit this at a later time. Who knows?

I just love to learn. And I don't necessarily mean in a classroom either. I think life experience is the best teacher any of us will every have. All we have to do is pay attention and we will be rewarded with something much more favorable than good grades. I'm talking about true knowledge. The kind you just can't get out of any textbook.

Thank again to everyone. Stay tuned for more updates. I'll provide a link to my new home guide on my shower filter comparison site as soon as it's finished. Don't be afraid to let me know what you think.

Time for dinner...

Here we go again....

While surfing the Internet the other day I came across a site that is making some pretty off-the-wall claims in regards to Vitamin C shower filters in general. I found it interesting because of the fact I actually use a very popular brand of Vitamin C shower filter in my home.

Normally I would have just hit the back button and moved on with my browsing, but something on the page caught my eye. The owner of the site, Mr. Water Filter, is claiming shower filters that use Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) produce dangerously high levels of hydrochloric acid and, therefore, should not be used. You can find the page here:

According to Mr. Water Filter, the following statement is true:

Vitamin C + Chlorine + Water = Hydrochloric Acid

So I decided to do a little research and came up with some interesting results. While this statement is true, there is something he isn't telling you. The following statement is also true:

Peanut Butter + Chlorine + Water = Hydrochloric Acid

I'm not trying to be funny here but I am trying to get my point across. The point is, hydrochloric acid is a byproduct of mixing chlorine and water. Whatever else you add to the mix is irrelevant. Hydrochloric acid can be found to some degree in every drop of chlorinated water in this country. It's also true that hydrochloric acid is present regardless of which shower filter you use. It's just not available in high enough concentrations to pose a potential health risk in my opinion.

I do agree that adding Vitamin C to shower water can lower the PH of water, making it slightly more acidic, however, I could find no evidence of this being harmful to the vast majority of people. I've been using a Vitamin C shower filter for well over 1.5 years without any negative side effects at all. In fact, I've noticed an increased softness in my skin. Since I work with my hands a lot they used to get very rough and dry. Not anymore.

He then moves on to his next point. Vitamin C in your shower water does absolutely nothing to aide in the health of your skin or hair. This is a highly controversial topic that has equally compelling arguments for both sides of the issue. I won't get into that for now because I don't want to bore you with the details. You can make your own judgment call as far as that goes. I personally believe there is some minor benefit that can be directly attributed to the addition of Vitamin C. But then again, what do I know.

It seems more and more resellers are worried about the potential for Vitamin C dechlorination being accepted in mainstream society. And yes, the purpose of Mr. Water Filter's article is to get you to buy his non Vitamin C brands of shower filters directly from his site. Just in case it wasn't already obvious enough for you.

When you take a look at the article you'll may also notice one huge and glaringly obvious omission. He makes no mention of the fact that Vitamin C dechlorination is superior in every way to traditional methods. Mr. Water Filter wants to divert your attention away from that very simple fact through his use of pseudo-scientific claims and fear.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Oh yeah, one more thing.

Here's a link to an article posted for anyone interested. It explains the use of Vitamin C dechlorination as it relates to the EPA's Engangered Species Act & Clean Water Act. I just want to make sure everyone knows I'm not making this stuff up. Enjoy!

The Consumer Guide to Chlorine Shower Filters

Well, my shower filter comparison site has been up for a while and seems to be gaining in popularity every day. I can't thank enough those of you that took the time to visit my site and actually read through it. I know I can be a little "long-winded" in my writing style, but I felt it was important to debunk much of the misinformation and straight-up BS being spread around these days.

For those of you that haven't visited yet I would advise you do so ASAP. At the very least you'll gain a sobering and eye opening new attitude towards your daily hot shower. The amount of chlorine you absorb through your skin and inhale into your lungs during the average shower is estimated to be close to 100 times that which is medically recommended. Don't believe me? Do the research.

Anyways, let me get off my soap box for a moment and let you all in on a dirty little secret the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has been keeping from you for years. Chlorine exposure in our homes has been linked to many cases of miscarriage, birth defects and several types of cancer.

Let me explain...

Chlorine, along with its many byproducts, is a disinfectant that attacks and destroys dangerous organic compounds in our municipal water supplies. This is a good thing. Without the addition of chlorine to our water supplies most of us wouldn't even be here today.

The problem with chlorine is that it works a little too well. Chlorine cannot differentiate between dangerous organisms and good ones. Once exposed to chlorine in your shower the chlorine continues to attack and destroy the organic compounds in our bodies. It systematically breaks down the healthy cells in our bodies potentially causing the formation of free radicals.

So what the hell is a free radical?

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Free radicals are very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electron to gain stability. Generally, free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule, "stealing" its electron. When the "attacked" molecule loses its electron, it becomes a free radical itself, beginning a chain reaction. Once the process is started, it can cascade, finally resulting in the disruption of a living cell.

Yeah, I know there's a lot more to it but all these big words are starting to give me a headache.

I think I'll sneak in a workout and take a long, hot, FILTERED shower afterwards. Be sure to post your comments once you get a chance to read through my website.
